Privateers Fall at UMass in OT

In a rematch of the 1991 Great Alaska Shootout final between then-relatively-unknown coaches Tim Floyd and John Calipari, the Privateers took UMass to overtime but ultimately lost, 103-95. Six Privateers scored in double digits, led by Thomas. Freshman Cameron Reed had 15, Hill and Christavious Gill added 14, Nate Frye 11, and Tevin Broyles 10.

New Orleans will head to the Cajundome to take on UL Lafayette on Monday evening to complete its non-conference road schedule.

For the second straight season, New Orleans defeated a Missouri Valley Conference opponent on the road, downing Bradley in Peoria 64-51. The Privateers were in control early and held a steady lead throughout the game, as the Braves got no closer than five points early in the second half.

Last season, the Privateers bested the MVC's Southern Illinois Salukis.

Abilene Sweeps Privateers

In a series that concluded with a Ron Maestri tirade and ejection, the Privateers (14-33, 3-21) fell for the third time this weekend to Abilene Christian at Maestri Field.

In the series' first two games, UNO lost 8-6 on Friday night after building a 6-2 advantage and squandering it in a five-run seventh inning.  On Saturday, New Orleans fell 7-3 despite getting 13 strikeouts from starter Kevin Kelleher.

In Sunday's game, ACU used a six-hit barrage in the fifth inning, aided by three Privateer errors, to score seven runs and blow open a close game. During the frame, coach Ron Maestri was tossed arguing that ACU's Marcelle Carter ran inside the baseline, causing UNO's third error of the inning on a wild throw.

There are no midweek games this week; the Privateers return to action at Nicholls on Friday evening.

Privateers Win First SLC Series

The Privateers (8-11, 2-4) won their first baseball conference series since joining the league in 2013-14, taking two games out of three from Stephen F. Austin at Maestri Field over the weekend.

On Friday night, New Orleans rallied from a 2-0 deficit, pulling out a three-run eighth for the 3-2 victory. Pitching in relief of an unusually wild (6 walks) but still somewhat effective Shawn Semple, Seth Laigast and Darron McKigney were each very effective, keeping the game in range for the late comeback.

On Saturday, SFA's Dillon Mangham, who entered the game with a 7.71 ERA, tossed a complete game four-hit shutout, baffling a Privateer team that made little solid contact throughout the afternoon.

On Sunday, entering the sixth inning, New Orleans had accumulated only five runs in 23 innings against a suspect Lumberjack pitching staff. They beat that total in the sixth inning alone, turning a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead that held up for the remainder of the game. After SFA scored three runs in the top of the first, Jordan Priddle relieved Daniel Martinez for UNO and threw six masterful shutout innings to earn the victory.

The win was a much needed one for the Privateers, who fell 2-1 on Friday night in a frustrating 12-inning affair.  Shawn Semple and the bullpen pitched well enough to win, but the UNO offense was stymied, much as they were earlier in the week in consecutive shutouts against Tulane and also on Saturday against the Blue Raiders.
