Privateers Finish Big Four-Win Week

Boyer's homer put UNO
ahead for good in Sunday's
first game
This week provided the upstart Privateers (13-3, 2-1) with their toughest tests of the season, and New Orleans responded with four wins in five games at Maestri Field, including a comeback win over Tulane and a series victory over Sam Houston State.

UNO won their first two Southland contests of the year over the Bearkats, as Sam Capielano delivered a walkoff single in Saturday night's 4-3 victory and Chaz Boyer blasted a go-ahead three-run homer in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. The Privateers hung on for a 7-6 win in that one, before falling 8-4 in the second game.

Capielano's single won Saturday night's contest
Earlier in the week, the Bucs rallied from a 7-1 deficit against Tulane, with Aaron Palmer notching a game-tying hit in the bottom of the ninth before the winning run came home on an errant throw from the outfield, completing the 10-9 triumph. On Tuesday, the Privateers battered outmatched Southern by a 14-4 score.

UNO will head to Baton Rouge to take on LSU on Wednesday night.

Another 3-pt Barrage Ends UNO Season

Junior guard Nate Frye
After surrendering 13 three pointers to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in a loss in Hammond, the Privateers gave up another 12 this evening in their first round Southland tournament loss in Katy, Texas. UNO fell, 84-74.

The Lions shot 12-for-25 from long range, countering New Orleans' offensively potent first half. UNO drained eight threes of their own in the first stanza but trailed 49-42 at the break.  After a quick start to the second half for the Privateers, the Lions hit a run of their own and never looked back.

Nate Frye had one of his best offensive efforts of the season, notching 21 points and 5 assists with just 2 turnovers. Christavious Gill added 18. Kevin Hill completed his solid UNO career with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

New Orleans finished the year 10-20.

UNO Sweeps Pitt Ahead of Big Week

Aaron Palmer had four hits and
four RBI in Friday night's win
The Privateers (9-2) notched their third consecutive weekend sweep, this time blasting the error-prone Pitt Panthers of the ACC by scores of 12-5, 13-6, and 8-5 at Maestri Field.

UNO got strong starts on the mound from Shawn Semple and Riley Hodge once again, and Daniel Martinez got out of a bases-loaded jam on Sunday to help preserve that three-run victory.

New Orleans will face a stern test this week, with non-conference tuneups against Southern and Tulane before the Southland Conference opening series at Maestri Field over the weekend against perennial league power Sam Houston.

UNO Is The Last SLC Tourney Qualifier

The Northwestern State Demons cut a 17-point second half deficit to five, but the Privateers (10-19, 6-12) were able to hold them off in a 97-86 victory and claim the last spot in the Southland Conference Tournament next week in Katy, Texas.  They'll meet Southeastern Louisiana in the first round.

New Orleans was bolstered by a career-high 38 points from Christavious Gill, on 8-for-12 three-point shooting, as well as 15 from senior Kevin Hill, who was playing his final game at Lakefront Arena.  Erik Thomas had 18 and 12 rebounds.  Zeek Woodley led Northwestern State with 25.

Earlier in the day, Nicholls defeated Southeastern Louisiana to claim an unlikely tournament berth and force a do-or-die showdown between UNO and the Demons.

Stop Us If You've Heard This Before

Erik Thomas had 18
The Privateers (9-19, 5-12) fell in yet another close contest on Thursday night at Lakefront Arena, dropping a 61-60 decision to Southeastern Louisiana.

Christavious Gill's driving layup put New Orleans ahead 60-59, but SLU's Marlain Veal nailed two free throws with 14.6 seconds left to secure the Lion victory.  Travin Thibodaux's attempted putback of a Gill miss failed at the buzzer. Erik Thomas led UNO with 18 points.

UNO will conclude the regular season Saturday night against Northwestern State at home.
